Kalmar Service Hero: Nuutti Norra from Finland
Nuutti Norra works as a mobile service technician at Kalmar Finland, where he is responsible for maintaining, servicing, and equipping terminal tractors and forklifts for various port, terminal, and logistics customers across southern Finland.
As a mobile service technician, Nuutti's workdays start and end at home, allowing him to plan his schedules independently. "Customers will call me directly or send me an email, and I'll arrange my schedule for the week accordingly," Nuutti explains. "We usually discuss the issue over the phone, which sometimes allows us to help the customer remotely or at least get an idea of which spare parts we'll need to bring. MyKalmar INSIGHT remote diagnostics also help us be better prepared when we actually get to the site."
Depending on the day, Nuutti might stop by Kalmar's workshop next to the port of Vuosaari in Helsinki to pick up spare parts and clean work clothes. "Sometimes, if there are larger repairs on terminal tractors, it's easier to do them here, especially if you need more tools or lifts," he notes.
Find it and fix it
Nuutti's favorite part of the job is fault diagnostics. "These are fun, especially when you actually manage to locate the fault," he laughs. "But it's always gratifying to track down a problem and find a logical explanation for it."
The industry is constantly evolving, and Nuutti has witnessed significant changes in maintenance work, particularly the shift from diesel engines to electric motors. "Of course, the same mechanical parts still need replacement due to normal use, but electrification is definitely having an impact on drive systems," he says. "In fact, we just finished an internal training period on electric forklifts as part of a delivery of battery-powered trucks. As far as I can see, customers have really liked the electric machines, especially when they see that they can run their operations just as effectively."
Service on the road
Nuutti's most important tool of the trade is his personal service van, which he uses to commute to customer sites. A trailer is used to carry additional gear and supplies for regular maintenance work on heavy equipment. "The van is equipped with all the basic tools and stocked with the most common spare parts that I need," Nuutti says. "At best, we've had the customer's machine back up and running in less than an hour from their phone call. That's pretty cool."
In his free time, Nuutti enjoys spending time with his family and in the outdoors. "Outside of work, it's pretty much just basic family life," he says. "I try to do at least one camping trip every year, so that's definitely a great way to clear your head."
Doing it right
Nuutti has been with Kalmar for a year and a half, but he has over a decade of experience with maintenance work on heavy equipment. He applied for the job after seeing a Kalmar job ad and envisions himself growing within the company, potentially taking on a senior technician role in the future.
"So far, I've really enjoyed working at Kalmar and would definitely hope to continue with the company for the long term," he says. "And yes, I can definitely recommend Kalmar as an employer. I think it's just a company where things are done right."
